Bias In The Unconscious Mind: How To Control The Ghost In The Machine

Jeff Stone, Ph.D.

Jessica Whitehead, M.A.

Psychology Department

Does your unconscious mind contain unwanted thoughts and feelings? Does your unconscious reveal biases against others that you did not know were there? Do unconscious biases accidently leak out when you interact with someone? Can you do anything to control the accidental expression of unconscious bias? This workshop will focus on what the scientific study of the unconscious mind can tell us about the existence, expression and control of unwanted biases we hold toward ourselves and other groups of people. The session will feature a demonstration of how psychologists measure the unconscious mind. We will also discuss several strategies for controlling the ghost in the machine.
