ScienceDirect is the full-text online collection of journals published by
Elsevier Science Press. The UA Library provides web access to
ScienceDirect journals that are subscribed to by one or more members of
the Arizona University Libraries Consortium (AULC). AULC includes, in
addition to the UA Library, the libraries of ASU, NAU, and the UA's
Arizona Health Sciences Center (AHSL).
You can access ScienceDirect via SABIO at
http://dizzy.library.arizona.edu/indexes/links/sciencedirect.shtml.
Once you enter ScienceDirect through the group login, click on
the "Journals" button at the top of the screen. This takes you to a
screen where you can either browse by subject categories or
alphabetically by journal title.
AULC "subscribed" journals are indicated by a green box next to the
title. Non-AULC ("non-subscribed") titles are indicated by a white box.
The UA Library has a credit this year for 4,000+
"free" downloads of articles from non-AULC journals.
It is important to use the free downloads wisely. A "download" means
that the full-text of the article is brought up on your computer,
whether it's as a PDF or HTML file and whether or not you print it off
to paper. We strongly encourage you to first view the free abstract to
better determine the value of the article for your purposes.
Once you are sure that the full-text of the article from a
non-subscribed journal is important to your studies or research, click
on the link to full-text (either "Article" or "Journal Format-PDF"). You
will get a dialog box that prompts for a userid & password. Click on
the "cancel" button in that dialog box. The next screen that appears
will have a link to "create a personal profile". Go ahead and set up a
personal userid & password. (Make a note of your userid & password!) You
will then be
able to download and print off articles from non-AULC titles.
If (or when) the 4000+ free downloads are used up during this year, you will
no longer be able to view full-text articles from Elsevier ScienceDirect
journals that are not subscribed to by one or more of the Arizona University
libraries. (You will still be able to view the table of contents and
abstracts.) At that point, use the Library's InterLibrary
Loan service to request copies of needed articles.
At the beginning of each calendar year, we will get credit again for a
limited number of free downloads from "non-AULC" journal articles.
Questions or problems regarding the use of these free downloads can be directed to Jeanne Pfander, Science-Engineering Team, University of Arizona Library,pfanderj@u.library.arizona.edu or phone: 621-6375.
