Plant Pathology Internet Guide Book created by Thorsten Kraska and hosted by the Institute for Plant Diseases & Plant Protection, Department of Horticulture, University of Hanover, Germany. A large and detailed internet resource guide including links to information on plant pathology and related fields which provides descriptions and some evaluation of the links provided.

Mycological Resources on the Internet from the World Wide Web Virtual Library. Provides a subject-based index on internet resources relating to Mycology. The list of links is extensive but little descriptive or evaluative information is provided.

Worms on the Web from the Filarial Genome Network established by Smith College, Northampton, MA, USA. This site provides links and descriptions of sites with information about the nematode C. elegans and other nematodes.

Nematology Sites on the Web compiled by the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln (UNL) Lincoln, Nebraska. Provides a list of Nematology and related sites on the web but does not provide description of content.

All the Virology on the Web from the Garry Laboratory in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the School of Medicine at Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana. A large and detailed site which aims to provide comprehensive information on web-based virology information for the professional biologist and general public.

Virus Database On Line compiled by the Research School of Biological Sciences Institute of Advanced Studies Australian National University, Canberra, Australia. Provides links to virus databases, classification projects, and other virology information available on-line.

Informational Sites

General Resources

National Agricultural Library(NAL), "part of the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is one of four National Libraries in the United States. NAL is a major international source for agriculture and related information.

Agricultural Genome Information System from the Department of Plant Biology, University of Maryland, College Park,and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Library' Genome Informatics Group (GIG) in Beltsville, Maryland, USA. "This server consists of genome information for agriculturally important organisms. At present, this encompasses mostly crop and livestock animal species. However, since all genome information is potentially valuable to our users we have information related to non-commodity species as well. Also included are a number of databases that have related information, e.g. germplasm and plant gene nomenclature data."

Dictionary of Cell Biology is "intended to provide quick access to easily-understood and cross-referenced definitions of terms frequently encountered in reading the modern biology literature. This server contains the text of the Second edition, published in April 1995, together with enhancements, hypertext links and new entries which are destined for the third edition."

International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (Tokyo Code) Adopted by the Fifteenth International Botanical Congress, Yokohama, August-September 1993. On-line version provided by the International Association for Plant Taxonomy.

NCU-3e. Names in Current Use for Extant Plant Genera from the International Association for Plant Taxonomy contains an electronic database which "has been generated from word processor files used for producing the camera-ready copy of the printed volume of NCU-3."

Common Names of Plant Diseases. From the Committee on Standardization of Common Names for Plant Diseases of The American Phytopathological Society.

USDA Plants Projects from the United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service. "The PLANTS Database provides a single source of standardized information about plants. The database focuses primarily on plants of the USA and its territories. The PLANTS database includes checklists, distributional data, crop information, plants symbols, plant growth data, references and other plant information."

Home of the Xylariaceae by Washington State University Department of Plant Pathology provides detailed information, including "Materials And Methods, "Key To Taxa," "Taxonomy," and "Biology," for 11 genera.

Biocontrol of Plant Diseases Laboratory (BPDL) of the Agriculture Research Service, USDA "carries out basic and applied research to discover and improve methods for biological control of plant pathogens and weeds using beneficial microbes.

Mycology

USDA's Systematic Botany and Mycology Laboratory from the Agriculture Research Service, USDA. The site contains information on the Mycological Society of America, current project, databases and documents.

Index of Fungi from Brazil "This database consists of a list of Brazilian fungi recorded by the Brazilian mycologist A.C. Batista and his co-workers from the Institute of Mycology of the Recife University."

The Digital Exsiccate of Fungi from the chair of Special Botany and Mycology, University of Tübingen, Germany. The site consists of an "online database offering descriptions of fungi complemented by detailed illustrations."

Fungi Images on the Net contains links to images of 650 fungi images on the web. The site was created by an "amateur mycologist."

Fungal Genetic Stock Center from the University of Kansas provides "information about fungi, the FGSC history, the FGSC catalog, genes and symbols used here and in the catalog, using the web site, availability of strains from the FGSC" and other information.

Myxo Web provides detailed information on Myxomycetes.

Guide to Moulds prepared by David Malloch, University of Toronto. The introductory guide includes "discussions of mould classification, methods of study, importance to humans, and identification. Picture and text keys are provided for many of the most common types found in soil, indoor environments, outdoor air, food, etc. Individual genera of moulds are described and illustrated."

North America Blue Mold Forecast Home Page from North Carolina State University provides "imely information on the occurrence of blue mold and the future movement of inoculum (fungus spores) in the North American continent."

Nematology

Plant and Insect Parasitic Nematodes Homepage from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln includes "Nematodes of the Northern Great Plains," "Nematode Diagnostics," "Molecular Identification of Nematodes Manual," and other resources.

Plant Parasitic Nematodes by Kathy Merrifield, Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, Oregon State University and Ben Muir of Lewis and Clark College, Portland, Oregon. It includes information on identification of plant parasitic nematodes which appears to be directed toward the non-expert.

USDA Nematology Lab Home Page from the United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Beltsville Agricultural Research Center Plant Sciences Institute. The site includes information on the USDA Nematology Lab, the collection, and other basic information on nematodes and lab techniques.

Worm Systematic Resource Network "The Worm Systematics Resource Network is a group of people with laboratories that maintain living stocks of nematodes. Through their generosity and cooperative spirit, these researchers and educators have made this resource available to the general scientific community for comparative biology, systematics, population biology and education." The site allows users to search for strains by taxonomic hierarchy and by laboratory.

Virology

Index Virum from the ICTV. The site provides "a collection of index files that list all names of virus families, genera and species found in Virus Taxonomy: Classification and Nomenclature of Viruses, Sixth Report of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (1995)"

Plant Viruses On Line Descriptions and Lists from the VIDE (Virus Identification Data Exchange) Database.

Epidemiology

Cereal Disease Laboratory from the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Research Service - Midwest Area. Provides information on cereal rust as well as information on the laboratory and its projects.

Diagnostic Keys to Major Tree Fruit Diseases in the Mid-Atlantic Region from the West Virginia University Kearneysville Tree Fruit Research and Education Center.

COST 817: Airborne pathogens of cereals Information on the project which "coordinates national research in European countries aimed at improving integrated strategies for the use of resistance genes and fungicides to control diseases of cereals."

Societies and Organizations

The American Phytopathological Society (APS). "The common goal of APS members is to promote knowledge of plant diseases and their control through publications, meetings, symposia, workshops and special activities."

American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) "is a global bioscience organization that provides biological products, technical services, and educational programs to private industry, government, and academic organizations around the world. The mission of the ATCC is to acquire, authenticate, and maintain reference cultures, related biological materials, and associated data, and to distribute these to qualified scientists in government, industry, and education."

British Society for Plant Pathology (BSPP) "was founded in 1981 for the study and advancement of Plant pathology. The BSPP welcomes members from all over the world who are interested in any branch of plant pathology. The Society organises regular scientific meetings and is responsible for the editing the international journals Plant Pathology and Molecular Plant Pathology On-Line."

Canadian Phytopathological Society The objective CPS "is to encourage research, education, and the dissemination of knowledge on the nature, cause, and control of plant diseases."

Global Crop Protection Federation (GCPF) is "the recognised worldwide representative of the Crop Protection Industry. Its activities are dedicated to promoting the environmentally sound use of crop protection products for the economical production of safe, high quality, abundant food, fibres and other crops."

International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) "is dedicated to organismal biodiversity the extent, recognition, organization, evolution, and naming of plants and fungi, both living and fossil."

International Mycological Association (IMA) "represents the interests of 20,000 mycologists worldwide. It is a non-profit making organization, the purpose of which is the encouragement of mycology in all its branches."

International Mycological Institute (IMI) "maintains one of the three largest service microbial collections in the world and incorporates the UK National Collection of Fungus Cultures."

International Society for Plant Pathology (ISPP) aims to "promote the world-wide development of plant pathology and the dissemination of knowledge about plant diseases and plant health management.

The International Working Group on Plant Viruses with Fungal Vectors (IWGPVFV) "exists to encourage research, contacts and communication amongst anyone who is interested in plant viruses transmitted by fungi and/or the fungal vectors."

Mycological Society of America with about 1300 members, is a "scientific society dedicated to advancing the science of mycology - the study of fungi of all kinds including mushrooms, truffles, yeasts, plant pathogens, and medically important fungi."

North American Plant Protection Organization (NAPPO) is a regional plant protection organization of FAO comprised of the National Plant Protection Organizations of Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The Organization operates to preserve plant resources in North America while facilitating agricultural trade.

Society of Nematologists (SON) "The Society of Nematologists is an international organization formed to advance the science of nematology in both its fundamental and economic aspects."
