Strategies
Finding translations can be a tricky business. Besides checking bibliographies of translations or the indexes listed below, there are a couple other strategies that sometimes bear fruit.
- Use the library catalog to locate all the books by the author and check the table of contents of each. Note: Not all books will have the table of contects listed in the library record, so you may have to physically inspect them
- Find the major books about the author and check their bibliographies and indexes
- Search Worldcat & RLIN (or RedLightGreen.com, the free version). First do a search using the Author search function (so that you only view the books by that author) and then try a keyword search, using the author's last name (trying various spellings if it has can be transliterated in different ways) and a word or two from what you would expect the translated title to be.
- For literary works, try the MLA, Humanities Abstracts, ABSEES & The Year's Work in Modern Language Studies (in print only). Sometimes translations get indexed in these sources
- Try various web searches. Sometimes websites will list the contents of books that do not come up in the library record.
- Ask your local librarian. Be sure to indicate which sources you have already used in your search
- Post a question on an academic listserv (like SEELANGS)
