- Entsiklopediia Krugosvet - Online, fulltext Russian encyclopedia.
- Encyclopædia Britannica Online. (Library subscription required) - Concise as well as scholarly articles on a wide range of subjects.
- Great Soviet Encyclopedia - A 31 volume translation of the 3rd edition of the Russian-language Bol'shaia sovetskaia entsiklopediia. Use of the index with this encyclopedia is crucial, as its ordering follows the Cyrillic, rather than the Latin, alphabet.
Specialized Encyclopedias
- The Cambridge encyclopedia of Russia and the former Soviet Union - A source of basic information about Russia and the other areas of the former Soviet Union. Divided into various subject areas. Some major subjects are history, language, literature and politics.
- The Cold War encyclopedia - A good source for quick information on cold war events and dates. Also gives other sources for further research.
- Encyclopedia of Eastern Europe - Covers historical and social events in Eastern Europe. Part of the Garland reference library of social science series.

- Entsiklopediia rossiiskikh prazdnikov - Encyclopedia of Russian Celebrations.
- Entsiklopediia russkikh obychaev - Encyclopedia of Russian Customs.
- Historical dictionary of the Orthodox Church
- The Modern encyclopedia of Russian and Soviet history - A 56 volume set consisting of articles and translations from Russian-language reference works.
- The Modern encyclopedia of Russian and Soviet literature - An ongoing series. Currently at 10 volumes. Consists of articles on authors, literary movements, and cultural figures in Russian/Soviet literature.
General Dictionaries
- Multitran — An online Russian/English-English/Russian dictionary that can recognize most latinized/transliterated Russian words and does a pretty good job at fuzzy-logic guessing what the user has in mind. A nice resource, especially for translators and non-Russian specialists (or for those that do not have their computers "Russified").
- The Oxford Russian dictionary. - PG2640 .W5 1997 Main Ref. — Includes about 180,000 words and phrases in the Russian-English and English-Russian sections. Intended for English-speaking users at the university level.
- Tolkovyi slovar' zhivogo velikorusskogo iazyka. - PG2625 D28 1994 Main Ref. — A reprint of Vladimir Dal''s seminal 4 volume dictionary. OED-like in its original scope. Somewhat dated today, but invaluable for use with nineteenth-century texts . Also available online .

- Obratnyi slovar' russkogo iazyka - Backwards dictionary of the Russian language. Contains over 125,000 words. Great for linguistics research.
- Polnyi pravoslavnyi bogoslovskii entsiklopedicheskii slovar - The Complete Russian Orthodox Encyclopedic Dictionary.
- Russian, English dictionary of abbreviations & initialisms
- Slovar' tserkovno-slavianskago i russkago iazyka - Dictionary of Old Church Slavic/Russian.
- Sokr.ru - An online dictionary of Russian/Soviet acronyms, initialisms, abbreviations, etc. Often includes a history of a particular term: what came before it and what supplanted it. Nice.
- Vocabulary of Soviet society and culture - A selected guide to Russian words, idioms, and expressions of the post-Stalin era.
Handbooks, guides
- Citation Guides for Electronic Documents - Gives information on how to cite your sources. See also the Citation Machine , an online resource to automatically generate the proper citation for MLA or APA style.
- Library of Congress Romanization Tables (Library of Congress transliteration) - Tables for the Romanization/transliteration of Slavic and other languages provided by the Library of Congress.
- Guide to the Slavonic languages - Describes twelve Slavic languages and provides selected texts. The three volumes are divided by East, West and South Slavic languages.
- A Researcher's Guide to Sources on Soviet Social History in the 1930s
- Handbook of Russian Literature - An alphabetically arranged handbook containing articles on Russian authors, scholars, critics, and literary movements. Edited by Victor Terras.
- Reference Guide to Russian Literature - A collection of fairly substantial articles/chapters on the major periods of Russian literature by top scholars in the field.
- Russkoe literaturnoe proiznoshenie i udarenie; slovar' -spravochnik - The canonical guide to Russian literary pronunciation and stress patterns.
- Slavic studies : a guide to bibliographies, encyclopedias, and handbooks - Arranged by country. Lists reference works by subject. Covers humanities and social sciences with major sections on Slavic history, languages, literatures and politics.
- The Transliteration of modern Russian for English-language publications - Thomas Shaw's guide to transliteration of Russian. Details the four major transliterations systems used in English.
