- ABI/INFORM - Covers a broad range of business periodicals, many dealing with financial and economic issues in Russian and Eastern Europe. Citations back to 1971. Some fulltext coverage for select journals beginning in the late 1990s. See the select list of e-journals (under "electronic journal content") below.
- ABSEES Online - Online version of The American Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies [DJK35 .A44 Main Ref/Main]. Covers journal articles, books, book chapters, book reviews, dissertations, and selected government publications on East-Central Europe and the former Soviet Union published in the United States and Canada. Coverage begins in 1998. Provides citations only. EBSEES (The European Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies), the European version of this publication, can be found in print at Z2483 .87 Main Ref. - Academic Search Elite - Multidisciplinary database that includes many full-text articles. Offers full text coverage for 1,000 journals and indexing for 3,000 journals. (Fulltext: 1992 to present) (Indexing: 1980 to present)
- Academic Universe - Lexis Nexis Online - Academic Universe carries the fulltext of many English language newspapers and other sources dealing with Russia and Eastern Europe. Many of these titles may be listed in the Library Catalog with a link to Lexis Nexis Online . Lexis Nexis does not always provide comprehensive coverage and offers only a selection of articles from many of its journal titles. To access a particular journal through Lexis Nexis, select "Sources" in the upper left hand corner of the Lexis Nexis main page. Locate the desired periodical using the alphabetical index on the next page, and select "Search This Title." Proceed with the search. Below are a number of the more important resources available through Lexis Nexis: TASS - English translation of material broadcast on the Russian/Soviet news service.
Current Digest of the Soviet/Post-Soviet Press. - News in English. Fulltext coverage beginning in 1993. CD ROM version (available in the IC CD cabinet) may allow for more flexibility in searching and saving. - Arts and Humanities Citation Index - Multidisciplinary database. Allows for general searches (for articles), and for citation searches (to see how many times a given article/book/author has been cited, and by whom). An extremely powerful resource. Coverage : 1990 to date. No fulltext. - ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) - Indexes a broad range of articles on education in journals and articles on ERIC microfiche. Many Slavic and East European titles are indexed. Coverage beginning in 1966. No fulltext.
- InfoTRAC Onefile - An interdisciplinary index to journals in humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Indexes 9,000 journals, magazines of interest plus the New York Times, 5,000 of which are available with at least some fulltext. Coverage: varies by title. A significant amount in fulltext . Replaces Expanded Academic ASAP
- FBIS (Foreign Broadcast Information Service) Online Index - An index to the FBIS Daily Reports (1975-1996) issued by the U.S. Government covering political, economic, scientific, and cultural issues and events throughout the world. Translations of broadcasts, news agency transmissions, newspapers, periodicals, and government statements from nations around the world are the sources of this information. Access is through Newsbank WWW . The fulltext of many of these reports is available through World News Connection (see below).
- GenderWatch - Multi-disciplinary, multicultural database covering a wide variety of publications. A good deal with fulltext. Coverage back to 1978.
- Global Newsbank - Online access to international news in translations, including news from the countries of the Former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Fulltext coverage back to 1993.
- Historical Abstracts - Indexes hundreds of journals dealing with non-North American subjects. No fulltext. Coverage back to 1955.
- Humanities Abstracts - Bibliographic coverage of humanities literature. Coverage: 1984 to date. No fulltext
- Internationale Bibliographie der Rezensionen Wissenschaftlicher Literatur = International Bibliography of Book Reviews of Scholarly Literature - An important source for citation information for West European scholarly reviews of books. Also in available in print in Main Ref. (with older volumes in the stacks) AI9 I61
- Internationale Bibliographie der Zeitschriftenliteratur = International Bibliography of Periodical Literature - An important source for citation information for West European scholarly articles . Also in available in print in Main Ref. (with older volumes in the stacks) AI9 B7
- ISI Emerging Markets - This resource provides access to the fulltext of hundreds of newspapers and other fulltext data from the Former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, and the Balkans. Also includes currency rates, financial data, market indices, etc. Many sources are available in both English or Russian. A remarkable resource.
- JSTOR - JSTOR provides the complete back runs of several Slavic Studies titles in fullpage PDF images. These include: Europe-Asia Studies 1993-1998; Soviet Studies 1949-1992; Russian Review 1941-1996; Slavic and East European Journal 1957-1998; Slavic Review 1961-1998; American Slavic and East European Review 1945-1961; Slavonic and East European Review. American Series 1943-1944; Slavonic Year-Book. American Series 1941.
- Literature Online (LION) - In addition to being an index to the fulltext of over 200,000 works in English and American literature, this resource offers fulltext access to over 100 journals in the areas of literature, linguistics, literary and cultural theory, and film studies, among others. While none of these journals deals specifically with Slavic studies, they certainly contain articles that may be useful to the Slavic Scholar.
- Literature Resource Center - A database containing much of Gale's Contemporary Authors, and Literary Criticism series as well as many others. Provides good, basic biographical, bibliographic, and critical information and resources on authors and works from nearly all cultures and periods. Many critical works, even those published contemporaneously with the literary works from the 19th and early 20th centuries are available fulltext.
- Letopis' zhurnal'nykh statei [Chronicle of Journal Articles] - Provided by University Digital Library Letopis' Zhurnal'nykh Statei is a digitized serial publication that indexes Soviet-era periodicals from 1956 to 1975. The paper version, in publication since 1926, covers more than 1,700 journals, series, and continuing publications of academies, universities, and research institutes in the fields of humanities, natural sciences, and the social sciences, and it also covers the popular periodical literature. Virtually any student or scholar studying Russian political science, literature, or history between 1956-1975 will find Letopis' Zhurnal'nykh Statei to be an invaluable resource.
- MLA Bibliography - Database of articles on literature, literary criticism, and linguistics. Coverage: 1963 to date. No fulltext.
- PsycInfo - Indexes a surprising number of Slavic titles. Citations are available for some publications as early as 1887. No fulltext.
- RLIN - A comprehensive union catalog for everything from books and serials to archives, manuscripts, maps, music scores, sound recordings, films, photographs, posters, and computer files from the advent of printing to the present, reflecting the collections of major research and academic libraries. Differs from Worldcat in that it historically was oriented around the Ivy league schools. Generally, it should be used AFTER consulting WorldCat.
- RussGUS - A free internet database of German language publications relating to Russia and the Former Soviet Union. Covers 1974-present. Contains over 170,000 records. Currently the search page is in German only. An English version is in the works.
- Russian Academy of Sciences Bibliographies (RAS) - Indexes journals covering the social sciences and humanities published in the Commonwealth of Independent States and Eastern Europe, many of which are not indexed elsewhere. Coverage begins in 1986. No fulltext. Its print counterpart, under the title Bibliografiia izdanii Akademii nauk SSSR [Z5055.R8 A3726 Main Ref./Main], provides indexing from 1960-1991. Help with RAS provides online assistance. A related group of free online databases (with the option of paying for electronic document delivery) which overlap significantly with the RAS database are available through INION at http://www.inion.ru/product/db_2.htm .
- Social Sciences Citation Index - Multidisciplinary database. Allows for general searches (for articles), and for citation searches (to see how many times a given article/book/author has been cited, and by whom). An extremely powerful resource. - Women's Resources International - A multi-disciplinary database with a surprising amount of fulltext. Many important and alternative cultural publications are covered. Coverage back to 1972.
- WorldCat - A union catalog for more than 2000 libraries around the world, including all major research libraries and many public libraries in the US and Canada. Provides a very detailed search interface for focused searches. Updated daily.
- World News Connection (WNC) - Access to the FBIS Daily reports (translated summaries of news reports in the vernacular) from Russia and Eastern Europe dating back to 1994. The indexes to previous FBIS Daily reports are available online through Newsbank WWW. The fulltext for older reports is located in Microforms at PREX 7.10:FBIS-EEU- or PrEx 7.10:FBIS-SOV-

- Index to Social Sciences and Humanities Proceedings - Indexes proceedings in the social sciences and humanities. A valuable resource, as proceedings, congresses, conference papers, etc. are often not indexed in other sources.
- Letopis' gazetnykh statei - Indexes hundreds of Russian (and previously Soviet) newspapers and other daily and weekly publications of all types. Issued weekly.
- Letopis' periodicheskikh i prodolzhaiushchikhsia izdanii - Indexes a broad spectrum of Russian/Soviet publications. Our subscription begins in 1961.
- Letopis zhurnalnykh statei - Indexes a broad range of journals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Includes quarterly index. Our subscription begins in 1961.
- Modern Slavic literatures - Lists critical writings on Russian and non-Russian authors. Literatures covered are Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Macedonian, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Slovak and Slovenian
- Year's work in modern language studies - Indexes a surprising number of periodicals in and about Slavic languages, often with excellent, brief abstracts. Publication tends to run several years behind, but well worth the wait.
Union Lists & Catalogs
- COCOREES — The Collaborative Collection Management Project for Russian and East European Studies in the UK, a portal for information on 90 different Slavic Collections in the UK. The site allows for a single search interface for locating serials at a number of institutions.
- Current CIS Serials — A list of currently received serials from the Commonwealth of Independent States [CIS] by the Center for Research Libraries. Articles from these periodicals are readily available to University students, staff, and faculty through Interlibrary Loan .
- Ethnic Press Database . — Another great resource provided by the Center For Research Libraries. Contains a list of periodicals and newspapers published by various ethnic groups in North America and held by the Center. The database contains more than 2,000 titles, including Albanian, Armenian, Bulgarian, Carpatho-Rusyn, Czech, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Croatian, Slovak, Slovenian, and Ukrainian. Articles from these periodicals, if owned by CRL, are readily available to University students, staff, and faculty through Interlibrary Loan .
- Foreign Newspapers at the Library of Congress. — This searchable database lists foreign newspapers currently received and permanently retained on microfilm by the Library of Congress. Articles from these newspapers may be available to University students, staff, and faculty through Interlibrary Loan .
- Foreign Newspapers . — A retrospective and currently received list of newspapers at the Center For Research Libraries. Also includes titles being microfilmed by CRL. Articles from these periodicals, if owned by CRL, are readily available to University students, staff, and faculty through Interlibrary Loan .
- Karlsruhe Virtual Catalog. — Offers a simultaneous search of as many as 75 millions books and serials in library and book trade catalogs worldwide, including the Library of Congress, the National Library of France, half a dozen major libraries in Germany and Austria, and the British Union Catalog, among others.
- PACSLAVs Union list of currently received newspapers in print and newspapers in microform . — Union lists of Russian and East European newspapers received in print or microfilm by at least one of the PACSLAV (Pacific Slavic Consortium) member institutions. Articles from these publications are more readily available to U of A students and faculty through Interlibrary Loan because of our membership in the PACSLAV consortium.

- Slavic Cyrillic Union Catalog. - Media. [microform] Z881 .U5
- Union List of Large Russian & East European-Oriented Microform Sets Owned by PACSLAV Consortial Partners — This is a list of large microform sets that may be of interest to the Slavic or East European Scholar. They represent an enormous amount of rare material. These sets are extraordinarily expensive. This list is intended to allow the scholar to, at a glance, 1) locate which institutions own relevant microform sets for possible future research at those institutions, or 2) give access to the contents of those sets through InterLibrary Loan. Interlibrary loan may only be available if the scholar is able to locate where in the set the documents he/she requires resides (for photocopying, or selective loaning of microfilm reels, or microfiche). Many of these collections contain guides (either as separate volumes or filmed on the first reel of a microfilm set), which may help the user in this regard. The U of A may own these guides or be able to acquire them if needed (through ILL or purchase).
