A Nation Divided (Map)

A Nation Divided
By early 1861, just before the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War, serious
economic and ideological differences divided the young nation, states’
rights and slavery paramount among them. These differences divided the
country geographically. Nineteen states, including seventeen industrialized
northern states and California and Oregon, were free; fifteen southern
states, whose economies depended on agriculture, permitted the ownership
of African slaves. Eleven of the southern states withdrew from the Union
and formed the Confederate States of America.
