Project Leads: Jim Martin (CoPI), Yan Han (CoPI)
Type of project: Strategic Opportunity; Carry-over from 06/07
Stakeholder teams: DLIST, SET, TSAP
Brief Description including Outcome or output expected (from charge):
The UA Libraries have been award a two-year (through July 2008) NEH grant of $125,000 to digitize and make available approximately 1,000 titles that represent the rural and agricultural history of Arizona. These materials were identified and ranked by experts and included in a bibliography several years ago. Grant money was awarded to seven different institutions to contribute to the overall digitization effort. Cornell University is coordinating the activities of the seven institutions with NEH.
5. MILLION BOOKS AGRICULTURAL DOCUMENTS
Project Lead: Jeanne Pfander
Type of project: Strategic Opportunity; Carry-over from 06/07
Stakeholder teams: SET, DLIST, TST; (external: College of Ag)
Brief Description including Outcome or output expected (from charge):
Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in partnership with universities in India and China and supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) is managing a project to digitize 1 million books and make them available on the web at the Universal Library site (http://www.ul.cs.cmu.edu/html/). Agriculture was identified as a collection focus for the project. Cornell University is coordinating land-grant or agricultural libraries participation in the Million Books Project.
In FY06/07, the UA project team selected, prepared and shipped 1000 Arizona Agriculture Experiment Station and Extension Service documents and associated MARC records to CMU which subsequently shipped those materials, along with other participating libraries’ agricultural documents, to the partner in China.
Outcome:
UA Libraries customers will have 24X7 access to unique Arizona agricultural documents. The Library will be able to withdraw print and/or microfilm thus saving shelf space which will be available for repurposing.
6. SONORAN DESERT KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE (SDKE)

Type of project: Strategic Opportunity; Carry-over from 06/07
Stakeholder teams: SET, DLIST; (external: College of Ag / OALS)
Brief Description including Outcome or output expected (from charge):
The University of Arizona Libraries (UAL) (funded by LSTA for $27,636) will partner with campus departments and community non-governmental / non-profit organizations to:
- Identify and assess existing information resources in both digital and non-digital formats that will help to inform University students, faculty and staff and the general public about the Sonoran Desert’s unique biodiversity
- Develop a prototype website that will host this information and allow for on-going contributions
- Present four community meetings (one each quarter) to highlight the Sonoran Desert advocacy, research, education and sustainability resources available or under development from/by SDKE participating entities
- Evaluate the impact of the collaboration on participating entities and the general public
- Disseminate the SDKE site resources and collaborative opportunities through conferences, community meetings and online links
Outcome:
Library customers and community members will benefit from increased awareness and access to Sonoran Desert educational, volunteer and sustainability resources.
SET members assigned: Kimberly Chapman, Jim Martin, Jeanne Pfander (co-PI’s)
7.SELECTION EFFECTIVENESS ASSESSMENT (SEA; formerly "IRM DATA") (New project)
Project Co-Leads: Kimberly Chapman and Jim Martin
Type of project: Team Ongoing
Stakeholder teams: TST, IS Teams, DDT
Brief Description including Outcome or output expected (from charge):
Teams and individuals with responsibility for information resource management should apply the quality standards, policies and best practices developed by the Information Resource Management Effectiveness Team (IRMET). 8. [CANCELLED January 2008] MARKETING SELECTED RESOURCES & SERVICES CRITICAL TO SET CUSTOMERS
Project Lead:
Type of project: Team short term
Stakeholder teams:
Brief Description including Outcome or output expected (from charge):
Feedback from SET customers (LibQual comments, anecdotal information, etc.) often indicates they are not aware of the resources and services the UA Libraries provide. This can result in under-utilization of resources and services that the Library has expended money and time in planning, selecting, making available.
SET will identify key resources and services and develop a consistent, unified and targeted approach to promotion and marketing of these selected resources and services.
Purpose/Objective Statement:
To develop a promotion/marketing approach for resources and/or services that is consistent and unified across the team.
Measurable outcomes (draft):
- Team members are familiar with various marketing/promotion methodologies
- 10% increase in use of promoted/marketed resource
- 10% increase in off desk reference questions from SET departments
- 10% increase in instruction requests from SET departments
- Create a template e-mail to send out to promote services/resources
- Create a promotion and marketing plan that the library and SET can use in the future
NOTE: The team decided in January 2008 to cancel this project due to staffing workload issues.
9. JUNIOR SCIENTISTS KIDS’ DAY 2007 (New project)
Project Lead: Jeanne Pfander, Joan Klose
Type of project: Team Ongoing
Stakeholder teams: SET, Development, MAT, All staff
Brief Description including Outcome or output expected (from charge):
SET and UA Libraries’ staff collaborate with faculty, staff and students from UA science-engineering departments and clubs, as well as public, private and non-profit sector organizations to provide interactive educational science exploration activities and demonstrations for children and families attending UA Homecoming 2007 on November 3.
Outcomes:
Positive, collaborative relationships developed between SET and science-engineering departments, student clubs and community businesses, organizations and individual donors. UA families with children have an educational, fun event to bring their children to on Homecoming Day. Enhance image of UA Libraries as positive, proactive participant in campus community. K-12 students are exposed to science and engineering as potential for future studies and careers.
Project Lead: TBD [Current participants: Elizabeth Kline, Ricardo Andrade, Jim Martin]
Type of project: Team Ongoing
Stakeholder teams: SET; (External: AHSL)
Brief Description including Outcome or output expected (from charge):
With the launch of BIO5, SET/AHSL BIO5 librarian subgroup planned several activities (workshop series, graduate teas, CoLAB) for fall 2007 to promote library services and resources to Keating building research occupants. We have great relationships with BIO5 administration staff who are very supportive of our efforts. One example of an immediate result is collaboration on a patents workshop with the Director of Business Development. Also, we are growing relationships with BIO5 members that attend our workshop sessions.
Subgroup librarians need to look beyond these activities so that we can continue making progress in promoting the Library. We are finishing up our workshop series and are at a junction point to begin planning both the graduate teas and the CoLAB session. Two things to consider: We shared the idea of graduate teas with our BIO5 contacts and they are excited about them. We haven’t printed any documentation on it so this is easy to forgo. Vicki Chandler, BIO5 Director’s, gave approval to recruit BIO5 members for the CoLAB session. The protocol is currently under human subjects approval review; it might not be so easy to take it off the table. It’s also not strategic to drop it since Vicki was really excited that it matched their mission of collaboration.
