Fixing broken links
Usually broken links are easy to find. Sometimes you will find that an old link was fixed, except that all of the link text wasn't highlighted so that one of more letters were still left as links to an old URL (in some cases the only bad link is a space). Hint: To avoid this, when modifying links, click with the right (alternate) mouse button on the link. This will bring up a menu "Link properties" as an option that will allow you to edit the link. Doing this will automatically update all link text.
Broken external links can take several forms.
- not found (404)
404 errors almost always need immediate attention. The remote Web site is reporting that the files requested don't exist - timed out ...
We allow 10 seconds for a response when testing links. Sites that are perfectly OK may time out if they are experiencing heavy traffic or if they just happen to be slow. However, This may indicate that the site doesn't exist any more, so test these links to determine the situation. - could not find ip address
This may mean that a problem with the Internet's domain-name service kept us from finding the server. It may also mean that server no longer exists. Test the link to check it. - internal server error (500)
This may be a temporary condition (hopefully the administrator of the server will fix it). It could also mean that the link to it is no longer valid and needs to be updated. - access forbidden (403)
The page is no longer available to the public, or the person who made the link initially supplied the necessary credentials for access to it but didn't make provision for other users.
These are some of the most commons errors reported. In any case, broken links should be checked by clicking on them to verify whether they work or not.
To correct a broken link (find the new location)
- Try starting at the top level of the site and see if you can navigate to the page you want at it's new location (Start at http://www.site.com/ to try to find the replacement URL for http://www.site.com/bats/pictures/carlsbad.html).
- Try searching Google or any other search engine to find the lost site.
- Try the Wayback Machine at archive.org to trace the history of a site (Don't link to this site! However, you may find copies of the site from multiple dates. The most recent one's may redirect you to the new location or at least give you a hint about what happened to it.)
- If you know the person or agency responsible for the Web site, try contacting them.
- Check the link again in a few days. If the site is experiencing serious problems it may take them some time to get back up.
- If the site is gone completely, remove the link and all references to it.
