INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY LEARNING PROJECT

OPEN HOUSE

JUNE 4, 1997

Identified "coordinating body" responsibilities:

1. Maintain/updating Staff Learning Center.

WHO: Bob Diaz; <(in all cases self-identified)

2. Surveying staff on a regular basis to identify technology competencies.

WHO: BD/Others

3. Updating/creating training modules.

WHO:

4. Coordinating instructions for teaching.

WHO: BD

5. Ordering training materials.

WHO: BD

6. Working with the implications of LPEMS II for individual computer competencies.

WHO: PM/L Project Team

OPTION 1: Coordinator

This would be a "new work" opportunity and new position who's primary responsibility would be coordinating basic technology training for staff. Position resides in LST (?) and works with Bob Diaz.

COMMENTS:

-Don't call it "coordinating body."

-The library needs a full time (100%) quality trainer who will coordinate, develop and perform training library wide. This person will be located where?? UST, LIST? I don't care.

OPTION 2: Cross functional Team - Ongoing

This team would be made up of identified stakeholder team members and would meet on a regular basis to coordinate training.

COMMENTS:

-This is the option I prefer. It's critical to have staff from LIST and skilled trainers to develop and deliver these modules. BD.

-I like this one best - too much for 1 person (option 1), not primary focus of other groups (option 3, 4 or 5). The training program needs staff from many teams to give it attention and care.

-This group could use training materials developed by the Education Team.

-Training groups, eg "Train the Trainers" has existed since med-80's. Did this group do a lit. search? Library needs quality trainers not just someone else to blame.

OPTION 3: Staff Development

Work that the ITLP has completed would be handed off to this body.

COMMENTS:

-The Staff Development Advisory Board has a different focus at this point. As the Staff Development person, I could not do this alone. I would need to work with LIST and trainers to get this done. BD.

-I think we're seeing more of a need for a Staff Development Team, not just an "advisory" group.

OPTION 4: LIST

Coordination of training would occur in this team due to its commitment to staff training as reflected in 96/97 objectives.

COMMENTS:

-LIST ought to commit to having at least one person with the appropriate knowledge & skill be willing to work with others in identifying what needs to be learned in designing appropriate curricula for training. BD.

-It's time LIST took some serious initiative at training. Of course, this would require some team members who can train and teach in common everyday language. :)

-Technologists don't always/often make trainers. Training is a learned skill. Like understanding adult learning theory.

-It is OK if LIST will be given a full time quality trainer position!

OPTIONS 5: UST

Coordination of training handed off to UST due to its commitment to continuous learning and existing training responsibilities.

COMMENTS:

-Yet another hand-ff to UST? E-gads! - they'll fumble the hand- off!

-Hand-offs are disempowering. Not a good idea to "dump" on one team so much.

-What is UST mission? Is it to train staff or to serve undergraduates?

OTHER COMMENTS:

How do other Libraries handle staff training?

>>> See ITLP’s Web page for examples

ADDITIONAL NOTE: Carrie Russell came up with some other ideas that were discussed with Bob Diaz but not recorded. Some of these ideas will re-surface when we do the final handoffs.
