Paper surveys

005	I like it more all the time. The LAN + Quicksearch are great.
007	Not enough computers and a color printer would be nice.
021	More computers are needed.
022	As for SABIO or OVID, I want to see more detailed--for example, a series of
years.
025	Never seems to be enough terminals--need terminal monitors.
030	Why after I check a topic that when I return to browsing, I get an extended
display on my screen?
031	Cannot find recent published papers\abstracts.
043	Put more computers in.
046	Right now, access seems great. I never have to wait long for a computer.
057	It was good fun.
059	Science citation index doesn’t work.
064	Great system, although should limit printouts for students.
067	It is sometimes hard to get a terminal when people are sending trivial email or
hacking. (Yes, you have at least 2 undergrads discussing their illicit access
successes. I’ve seen them at least 6 times in the last 3 months. I haven’t
tried CD ROM LAN access in several months but before that, it took forever
to get one loaded into the central drive. Maybe this has been improved? The
SciRefStaff has been wonderful. Very helpful (and forgiving of my dumb
questions)
071	The internet is easily accessible yet understanding email is more difficult.
079	Sometimes the computers take too long to process what I need---there have
been several times where they froze and I was not able to get through.
081	You need more computers in Sci Lib.
082	Give workshops on how to use systems (post times in Library
084	The staff does a very good job of helping when necessary.
095	The information provided by the Library is substantial for any amount of
research. There is always help when necessary.
100	Very satisfied with the Library.
102	I am off campus faculty and rely heavily on the internet for information. I
have tried numerous times to access CD-ROM LAN or current contents
through SABIO from our internet network in Yuma, but have always failed. I
always follow instructions given to me but can never successfully complete
gaining access. Having offcampus access to Agricola and Current Contents
would greatly enhance my ability to conduct an efficient research program.
103	I am very happy about the computer system here. It is very accessible, easy
to use and time saving. The Sci Library computers in particular have been a
great asset to me. The location is centrally located on campus, making it a
great place to stop for quick info when I’m in a rush. These computers also
have acrobat reader permanently installed (many labs don’t) which is key in
my retrieval of class notes off the web.
104	It’s a wonderful extention to the old catalog system.

106	Many times the Libraries’ computers freeze when they are downloading
information. This really drives me crazy, especially since I usually have to
wait a number of minutes to use them. Although today was an exception.
108	Instructions regarding ERIC #s such as those with ED would be helpful. Once
you have this #, where you can find the actual paper, for example.
119	Used GEO Ref and would have liked to use a longitude-latitude criteria but
couldn’t figure out how--did not try hard either.
124	Need to make quick search more accessable.
125	Sometimes it’s tough to find an available computer, but once I find one, the
system works well. The staff has always been very nice and helpful when
I’ve had questions.
131	I’m glad you still have the telnet version of SABIO because its easier and
faster to use than the web-based version--don’t have to move the mouse--
keystrokes are quicker. Also, thanks for having Acrobat reader so we can
view CDC’s MMWR! (BLC doesn’t have it)
132 They should have step by step instructions in hard copy at each work station
for each specific task--a procedure manual.
133	I prefer science library very much.
135	At times, SABIO is slow but fine with me. I prefer the older system before
you had all these fancy computers. Staff very helpful.
138	I had fun.
142	I find that the Library system here is excellent. I found only some of the
information I was seeking because my topic was somewhat obscure. On
other days I have been able to find all the information I needed very easily. I
think this system is very sophistocated and is much better than the old card
catalog systems.
148	In the main library it is really hard to find an open computer. So I came to the
Science Lib--It is also hard at the other computer labs to find an open
computer.
149	the library computer system is great.
150	The library system is fine. It’s Qlterm and Pine that suck.
152	More workshops
155	I want to know some detailed information of every database of CD-ROM LAN
access.
159	In reference to #4, unable to type a report.
164	There should be more printers.
166	Need more computers.
167	It seems that it is difficult to figure out which database to look in. It was also
frustrating to discover that some databases available thru telnet are not
available on the net. I’d like to have net access from home. Why is that
restricted? BTW, the reference librarians are very helpful.
169	This is a well-run facility with very helpful personnel.
170	Prefer MYLVILE system (UC system).
176	The computers are well-configured and well supplied with RAM, color cards
179	Would like PPP access from home. Otherwise, library computing is great.
182	it does it’s job.
185	Thank god for the Library’s computers and most of all, the laser printers. I’m
able to print diagrams with 100% clarity.
188	I believe the library’s computer system makes finding what you need, quick
and easy and once you know how to use it.
189	thank you
190	Very slow interlibrary loan service.
192	I like the system.
196	Good. Many computers.
199 I hope I can read Chinese from netscape one day.
207 Every assistant at reference desk is very helpful. The assistants were so kind
as to reply to my questions. If it had not been for their help, I could not have
finished doing my research. They also taught me how to use the computer to
find some proper information. I could not thank them enough too much.
208	Only poroblem: often there’s a wait to use computer--need more access.
210	The terminal software for using the LAN CD-ROM journal indices can be very
aggravating. The CDs fail to initialize on too many occasions and the escape
key combinations can be difficult to remember.
212	Workers here are very helpful and friendly.
213	The Library’s computer system staff are doing a great job.
217	Noise is not good. May need more terminals.
221	Should have more computers available.
224	Need to be able to print email.
225	Need more terminals.
229	Good system but library could use more journals.
231	Sometimes problems with server crashing--application suddenly crashes.
232	Instructions for obtaining obscure proceedings or articles not in the Library’s
collection should be made clearer.
233	Can you please add excel or a word processor to a couple of the systems?
236	It would be a plus if there could some computers available on other floors of
the Library besides the lobby.
237	Library staff is very helpful. Computes are accessible/available. Science Lib
access preferred over main library.
241 So much info.
244	the windows interface is fine--the textbased browser is not as good. Can’t
think of much to improve on. If there is an online tutorial--great. If not, make
one.
250	The computer system can be a pin in the XXX when the server goes out as
frequently as it does.
251	Due to the sheer amount and diversity of subjects, first time users will almost
always have to ask. Especailly never having been exposed to this specific
system.
260	It can be frustrating when the system goes down, especially PINE. Even
though I’ve encountered it only once, it really set me back.
263	Library staff really helped me a lot.
271	Sometimes it’s hard to find an open computer.
276	Access to internet stations is sometimes lengthy. All stations frequently
being used. Generally, I find SABIO good for books but am confused on how
to look up magazines and journals.
281	Please update to windows NT 4.0. The 3.51 crashes a lot especially when
trying to print graphics intense jobs. I understand that 4.0 has gotten past
this. Also, its windows 95 user interface is much easier to use. Also
Netscape crashes a lot under 3.51 itself.
289	There is always available help at the desk to ask questions.
300	The staff have been extremely helpful. I wasn’t able to find what I needed.
Detailed information on eocene coals. However, I’m not yet sure whether it’s
the computer (GEORef and catalog) or a general dearth of information.
301 I find the numbering system on the books very confusing.
304	Reference librarians are helpful. Would like toxline as in AHSC-- a database
on integrative medicine.
315	Bivsis in the database index is hard to get into and can’t print anything.
322	Helpful staff. Need to stay open longer on Friday and Saturday nights.
324	Sometimes printers don’t print.
325	Usually there seems to be some sort of problem; if you can get on and print,
it’s much better.
336	Library staff is helpful. Paper waste is high.
346	Can anything be done about the Jr. and High school kids? Some are using
the Library as a baby sitting service (the faculty and staff) and some kids just
come in by themselves. Either way, the computers get tied up.
348	I have email figured out, but the free workshops sound very helpful and
worthwhile. I intend to take the internet intro soon because when I try to get
on that by myself, I get very frustrated. It seems smore time consuming
(internet) than helpful. Hopefully the workshop will change my attitude.
355	Need more computers.
358	There should be more terminals provided to the students.
362	Not enough machines. Not enough bandwidth!
371	Things change a lot.
377	Sometimes have to wait a while.
379	Camputers are rarely available.
381	Thank you for making it possible for us to use this profound technological
device.
391	Using the system is okay when there is a computer.
400	I think the new internet version of SABIO is slower than on the old
monochrome monitors, since you have to click on all sorts of things instead of
just typing. Also, I can’t find the more bioliographic info on the new version.
 Was it taken off?
406	Kind of annoyed that people tie up computers with email.
409	The main problem lies not in the use of the system but rather in actually
having a machine to use. Usually the machines do not become readily
available and this causes difficulty in performing research--which lies at the
heart of my activity. One the whole, the University Library computers may be
tied up with inefficient uses of this resource.
411	Caused much inconvenience with printers out of service!
415	It is hard to keep up with the technology changes. I plan to check into
gettting some formal training on research in Library (using computer stuff).
422	Sometimes equipment problems.
428	I feel the computers here are easy to use. I also feel they are a great help in
finding what you need.
437	More computers needed! More reference librarians needed!!
438	I’m glad the Library aides are willing to help.
439	For simply finding a book in the Library the search with the mouse takes
longer. However, access to the internet etc. easily makes up for the longer
length of time it takes to use SABIO.
442	It’s crowded often.
449	I have problems using a mouse. I only use the Tel-net computers. As long as
you keep these available, I will find the system easy to use. I will be
frustrated otherwise.
456	Improve the ILL management and distribution or pull ILL on the system.
461	Update to Windows 95. Windows 3.1 is very difficult to deal with.
468	There aren’t enough terminals for us to use freely.
472	More info commons computers needed.
479	I prefer to use telnet to search SABIO and am glad you still have some
terminal left that are strictly telnet.
481	Regarding the Library in general--the staff (eg. At reference) is very helpful
and patient.
486	Assistants at reference desk were so kind (excellent) that I could get to know
how to use it.
487	These are working fine.
488	Easy except for crowds and noise. I appreciate availability of services.
Thanks.
489	The guide to CD-ROMS could be displayed more clearly (a poster or sign
listing all, and which terminal they’re on) — I looked in a bunch of notebooks,
but I’m not sure I discovered all there is. But basically, great system--so nice
to be able to find and print so much.
491	I am very impressed with the amount of information I was able to access.
The added web access is a plus! The system seems to be very user-friendly.
493	There are rarely enough available terminals. Todays seems to be an exception
because it is virtually impossible to get to the Library on a game day.
Terminals are often down, not working. In the past, when I have needed help
from reference librarians, it is sometimes (from some Librarians) given in a
very surely fashion.
495	Usually too many people on them.
498	Why can’t we borrow any newspapers?
500	I just had a hard time probably because I’ve never used it before.
507	We need more computers than we have now.
509	Need more Library assistants to aid with computer issues.
517	The UofA’s free internet access is one of Tucson’s greatest resources. It
does honor to the true spirit of democracy: The free exchange of (sometimes
controversial) ideas and information. Too bad the Library isn’t open more
hours on the weekends.
527	The system is great, but there is also a great need for more terminals.
528	Please upgrade the browsers.
532	I tried using the web site at home and the input box never shows up.
539	At first, accessing my email account from different stations was confusing.
But I learned by asking. I am glad you don’t charge for copies of stuff off the
internet because ALL of my class work is on it.
547	We need more terminals.
555	Maybe have better limits to what people can do — no email use at all.
569	Having been a researcher for an international center for scholars in
Washington DC, I find the UofA Library much easier to use than the Library of
Congress, but you could stand to improve the portion of the system used to
search periodicals.
571	I think you need more computers because I usually have to wait quite a while
for an open computer.
572	The system seems to be pretty slow. There are not enough computers for the
demand.
573 My domain of research is more specific and the system seem not to be much
involve in that (legal research on Bonkins Lsw and NAFTA countries are other
groups in Africa)
576	I really appreciate the printing availability--thanks.
578 Awesome helpful staff on Tuesday nights!
579 The only problem I find is that there are often errors on Netscape and the
computer kicks me out and I lose my search info.
581 Computer is easy to use....but availability is not so easy and email is problem.
582 It was really hard to find information on subjects there seem to be an
abundance of!
583 I only use SABIO. I don’t know how to use the other systems.
584 I like this Library. Sources are available; assistance is available. Assistants
are very helpful, informative and enthusiastic!
585 I was very pleased with the Library assistance and enthusiasm.
586 I hate the copying machine procedures. It’s incredibly stupid!
591 It’s a big improvement over old SABIO.
592	I like it lots.
596	Please keep staff available for assistance and please pay them more. They
are fabulous!
597	More access to difficult tasks with memory are need, ie listening to music for
class.
600	I have some problems when I want to find articles of journals using the
author’s name.
601 I think the process is very logical, so we only need to get the basic and then
we can go by our own. But is good to attend the Library’s workshops to be
familiar to the facilities and tools.
603	I hope the UofA should increase the number of computers in the Library.
606 Please bring back SABIO on the computers designated for email.
608	Slow response on the internet today.
610	Can not contact the library system through home computer. My computer is
not linked to the UofA. Had to wait several minutes to get a computer today.
619	I like it so far but I am still new to the place.
620	Very useful and easy to use.
624	the computer system at the library offers a lot of information however it is
not easy accessible.
627 The supply of the computers are too small to meet with the higher demand of
students who want to use them. Should impose some new regulations
especially limit the time of using the computers for the email. On the other
word, give the priority for those who really, really want to use the computers.
630	More computers are better.
636	Fast/clear/organized---thank you.
637	The lady that helped me did an excellent job.
645	Need more internet sites.
647	Not enough computers--my tuition should pay for a few more!
648	As someone trained in the use of the old-fashioned card catalogue, I still
prefer browsing by that method. Today trying to find where in the library
books on the post-Civil War South (illustrated preferably) would be--I couldn’t
get there on the computer!
652 We just need more computers.
654	More library help.
657	There’s a training session at my residence hall for SABIO etc and a lot of the
frosh start that way.
659	There needs to be more terminals. Waiting to use one is a pain. Buit once
you get on, it’s a great system.
661 Need acrobat reader on machines
662	Now that I learned to use the SABIO netscape library research is a breeze.
674 This is my very first time and am not successful yet but I’m trying.
684	Possibly more “high” chairs. More computers. I do love the fact that we
have this accessible now. It’s great and I do appreciate it.
686 Extremely difficult to get in to do the work. Perhaps if folks could not play
games or do email, more terminals would be open for library use.
696	As a new computer user, I am overwhelmed. But once I get the hang of it, I’ll
be okay. Thank you. We appreciated this more than you know.
697	It’s not your fault, it’s professor Nequett’s.
699 the Librarians know EVERYTHING!
700	You need a much bigger information commons computer center!!!!
701	Larger word processing area (Information Commons)
713	I am disabled and required the kind assistance of the reference librarians.
719	Please put more computers available at prototype. Thank you.
721	Everyone here is extremely nice and helpful.
722	Keep up the good work, advertise the free workshops you might offer better.
726	Often all the terminals are full. Maybe more terminals would help.

Electronically submitted surveys

851	It would be useful if all the databases were available to all users.
853	Web interface is usable but many activities the old interface is easier.
854	I’ve had trouble using the research journals search for articles.
858	The interlibrary loan request and book recall screen needs to have some as I
had to request assistance from the library staff when I made it to campus
inorder the proper format for the code number (as read from a new ID card,
eg to drop the “A” at the beginning and end.) I would suggest an orptional
link to an example of both new and old IDs and the corresponding ID
numbers.
860	I know that this institution is going to extremes over affirmative action but
what you have done to SABIO is rediculous. Are the Spanish sub-titles really
good for anything? I am confidant that anyone attending this university is
well versed in the English language. Why is this library willing to waste
money on something as useless at Spanish sub-titles? It’s time to reprioritize
what really is important at a major university. Making a few loud mouthed
political groups happy should not be one of them.
865	I am a mba student from SC browsing the net for research material and your
site made it very easy to narrow down what books I need to read. The first
I’ve seen this easy. Thanks!
867	I am a third year student at Front Range Community College in Boulder, CO. I
wanted to find some information on the book, Seven Years in Tibet, but was
only able to find the author’s name. Specifically, I wanted to know how
much philosophical input is included by the author in this book. I am looking
to read it for a Philosophy of Religion class.
871 I'm a retired faculty member/department chair from Cal State Univ,
Sacramento who now lives in Vail. Are there any courtesy privileges avail to
me either as an academician or community member? My e-mail address is
jrheller@dakotacom.net, Thanks, Joseph R. Heller, Ph.D.
875	I like that most of the computers now have netscape on them so that I can do
both sabio and www without waiting for a specific computer. It’s also nice
to have access to the academic index.
876	Please perform mouse maintenance. I cannot get the mouse to move where I
want to and it is starting to drive me crazy. Thanks for letting me yell at you!
877	There are not enough terminals. I had to wait about 30 minutes to get on a
computer.
880	I couldn’t find a dictionary with a list of the words. Only dictionaries where
you enter your word for a search of it.
887	You guys spelt “out” incorrectly when you asked how I figured out how to
“figured it out myself,” it says “Figured it our myself.”
893	I wish there were more specific details about books/articles/abstracts to zero
in on exactly what I need. If the description were a little longer and
comprehensive for each entry I believe it would help.
895	Please give more information when search in jourals. Can I check information
based on articles?
903	The one thing that really frustrates me is how difficult it is to report a book
missing. The last several times I have discovered a reference material that
needed to be searched I have had to spend more than 45 minutes trying to
get the search process started. I get the feeling that I am creating a problem
rather than assisting in solving one. I am certainly not inspired to do this
again.
906	Today I am attempting to renew my books. cannotfind link from home page
to do this. accessing sabio through internet explorer.
910	The server is much too slow.
911	I am working in a library and am using your system from an engineering firm
in California. I have found your library to be a good source for electrical
engineering materials which I can obtain from interlibrary loan. The new
catalog is excellent.
913	I would be very satisfied with the computer system if I could use it from
home without a u.arizona.edu electronic address. Other than that it works
great. Cory Tollman, namllotc@aol.com
915	When I make a mistake and wish not to continue with my choice or it takes
too long for the computer to look it us, I can’t stop the computer so I can
continue in another section. The instructions say to press contr C. I did it. It
doesn’t help. I even tried esc. It doesn’t work. What’s up with that? I want
a system that’s simple.
916 I like the new system--it was a great Idea jto put Sabio on the web because
even when I can go home I can do my research. what's frustrating is that
what's in the computer is not always on the shelf!
917	In INDEXES there is an “other” category that gets you into a telnet session. I
like the new system--it was a great Idea jto put Sabio on the web because
even when I can go home I can do my research. What's frustrating is that
what's in the computer is not always on the shelf!
919	I can’t use the expanded index because you have to have a specific ip address
to enter. Why don’t you guys use social security codes and pin numbers so
that everyone can use the system whi is a student at the University.
922	The information I was looking for was vast and easy to find.
925	We need to be able to type in the subject of an article and find at least three
or four. The Sabio keeps giving me book titles only.
926	You need to proofread this page. Figured it “out” myself
930	I received help from Pima County--Tucson Library system. I am very grateful
for the internet services I get through UA. I am disabled and not able to
afford AOL or another service. Also, my computer is a 1990 IBM PS/1 and
while it doesn’t support graphics or Windows (uses Microsoft works) I can
still get to the net and have e-mail because of my UA connection. Thank
you!!!
931	The key words is hard to use. In order to get to the right article.
932	I was denied access to everything I needed access to. Not very friendly
denials either. One was quite humorous. I attempted access to an
anthropology index and got the message “not allowed” and then “...aren’t
allowed ...” I will try via telnet to use CARL. So, are the indices unavailable
to community people because of index copyright restrictions, etc. or simply
unavailable due to library policy or .....??? Ek Buys ejb@azstarnet.com
934	The computer system is fine. I found everything I needed (even though some
of it also meant finding out things I needed would have to be recalled). Now
if only the Library itself were as easy to use.
935	I haven’t been in Sabio for awhile. I really like what you’ve done with the
interface. It’s easy to understand and to use.
936	It would help if the Library could send an email something like a week in
advance before an item is due. (I know that one can review one’s record with
Sabio--but still it would be helpful if one is reminded, especially when items
are due six months later).

937	I have never been so close to commiting suicide in my life. I was completely
lost in your huge network of dead ends. I asked for sources containing the
words divorce and effects and I got fourteen sources from the last century.
938	It is kind of hard to find things using sabio, due to the need for very specific
things. You can’t really look for things on a general topic.
940	I find it very frustrating that when I check books out if the library, that within
a few days people have the right to request them back from me. I don't
check them out for my health and most of the time they are not books that I
can just m (the comment ended at this point).
